Chapter IV. Dublin (제4장: 아일랜드 공화국의 더블린)
아일랜드에 대한 관광정보를 사전에 가지지 못한것은
내가 바쁜일로 준비를 못한이유도 있지만
주위영국인들에게 아일랜드공화국에 대하여 묻자
그들을 별로 답변을 해주지 않았다. 왜 그럴까 하는 나의 의구심은
아일랜드 공화국으로 들어가면서 풀렸다.
I blamed myself for having not enough tourist information on Dublin because of my tight schedule
in the University. There was, however, another interesting factor which should be blamed for.
영국으로부터 투쟁의 결과로 독립한 공화국은
1970년대부터 산업근대화에 힘을 기울여
도로등 사회간접자본의 발전된 모습을 보여준다
한국의 넓게 뚫린 고속도로를 오랜만에 보는 느낌이다.
그런데 영국인들은 아직도 아일랜드를 잘 살지 못하는 나라라며
비하의 눈으로 보고 있다한다.
하지만 그 발전을 모르지 않는 영국인들은
변화를 싫어하는 자신들의 일종의 시기성 눈초리로 바라본는것 같다.
그래서 그들은 공화국에 대한 언급을 잘 하질 않는다.
The Republic of Ireland, which has acquired its independence by the struggle with the U.K, strived its
industrialization since 1970, and they became to have modernized infrastructure, such as a highway.
The big and straight roads in the Republic reminds me that of my home, Korea.
With this situation, in the one hand the UK citizens, who do not like ‘change’, looks R. Ireland with
jealousy eyes, and the other hand they try to keep look down Irish as a poor part of the world,
which makes them not to mention about the Republic of Ireland. However, this is only my private
opinion about their reluctance to speak the city of Dublin.
우선 정한 숙소가 기대이상으로 좋았다.
가격도 Belfast에 비해 훨씬 저렴했고 무었보다
매우 친절 하였다.
유럽최대의 맥주공장 이라는 Guinness옆에 있어 찾기도 쉬웠다.
The Hostel I made reservation in Dublin was good more than expected; it was good price
and they welcomed us. Furthermore, the location was perfect also for it was next of Guinness,
the biggest beer maker in the European countries.
Dublin에서 pub에 가질 않으면 할일이 많지 않다고 한다.
관광안내서에서도 “당신이 pub에 있지 아니할때 가볼만한 곳”이라며
관광장소를 알려준다.
Somebody says that there are not so much things to do except going to pub.
In Dublin, you can see the tourist pamphlet says ‘where to go when you are not in a pub’.

Dublin은 서울만큼이나 교통사정이 좋지 않다
개발로 도시 몇군데는 공사중인 곳도 많다
The city of Dublin has heavy traffics as in Seoul, and many places are
under construction by the scheme of the development of the city.

시내관광은 자동차로 하기에는 너무 힘이 든다.
그래서 우린 관광용 tour bus를 타기로 했다.
There is a serious problem when try to park in the city, so we choose a tourist bus.
Language tour라 하는 이 버스는 영어뿐아니라 불어, 독일어, 일본어 등으로 안내하는데
버스 동승 아나운서는 물론 영어로 재미있게 설명한다.
24시간 승하차가 자유로이 사용할수 있다.
This ‘Language Tour Bus’ provides a service of tourist information with French, German and Japanese.
The guider who is on the every bus speaks English with live explanation of the scene.
When you buy a ticket of this bus, you can get on and off in every points freely within 24 hours.

넬슨을 기념하기위해 세웠다는데 장관이라기 보다는
이 도시에 과연 어울리나 하는 개인적인 인상을 갖게 했다.
높이가 120m라는데 시에서 가장높은 건축물로 건축기술에 놀란 뿐이다
많지 않은 시간을 관광하기에 우리가 유일하게 들어가 자세히 본것은
Writer’s Museum이다. 멋진 교회옆에 자리한 Writer’s Museum…
This tower, which was built for the memory of G. Nelson, looks like un-hamonized nature
with the city rather than a spectacular view.
With its 120 m heights, the Spire 2003 is boasting its modern architecture
아일랜드 공화국은 문학을 매우 자랑스럽게 생각한다.
우리도 알만한 James Joyce, Shaw, Yeats, Swift, Pearse그리고 Frank O’Connor등
수많은 문학작가의 고향이 아일랜드이다.
R. Ireland prouds of its national literature. Lots of famous writers such as James Joyce, Shaw, Yeats,
Swift, Pearse, and Frank O’Connor have Ireland as their homeland.
영어에 아직 익숙치 않은 우리들이기에 그냥 보기만 하려 했더니
방문객 모두가 안내용 테이프를 듣고 있다.
우린 모두 영어이해여부를 떠나 듣기로 하였다. 역시 작은애가 가장 잘 듣는다.
At first we tried to have our Museum tour only in sight, but we found everyperson in the first hall
had audio tape in their ears. We decided to have Audio in spite of our difficulty in hearing spoken
English. The youngest in my family, Seungju, seemed most understood among us.
작은애가 읽으려 산 문고의 한책도 여기에 진열되 있었다.
We were surprised to see this book had been displayed in the showcase at W.Museum.
Previously, Seungju bought this very book at a shop to read at Aberdeen city centre.
이곳엔 헨델이 메시야를 이곳에서 초연하였을때 앉았던 의자가 있었다.
사진촬영이 금지 되었으나 나의 궁금증과 기록에 남기고 싶은 욕심을 누르진 못했다.
또한 걸리버여행기의 작가 올리버 스위프트, 드랴쿨라 등이 이나라의
작품임에 다시 한번 놀랬다
This wooden chair was occupied by J.F. Hendel when the Messssiah was played
in the first time at Dublin. Photo taking was forbidden at Museum, however, my curiosity and desire
to have my own picture data drove me to take a sneak shutter.
Dublin시는 강(River Liffey)을 중심으로 위 아래로 형성되 있어 이 강만 보면
어디든 찾아 다니기는 어렵지 않다
그래서 강을 연결하는 많은 다리들이 있다
The city of Dublin composed around the River Liffey that crosses the city from west to east.
Hence you can find the places easily when you find this river.
There are many small-size bridges across the river.
Book of Kells가 있는 Trinity College
Dublin은 대학이 유명한 관광명소중의 하나이다.
이는 흥미롭게도 Belfast도 마찬가지 현상이다.
학교는 학생들보다 관광객으로 더 붐비고 있다.
In Dublin Trinity College attracts many tourist, and this can be applied to Belfast, the Capital city
of the Northern Ireland in the same manner interestingly. The campus filled with curious tourists.

AD 800여년경에 Iona공동체 (Scotland 동쪽에 위치한 섬으로 Britain의 기독교화에
전초기지 역활을 한 기독교 단체 모임) 에 의해 쓰여졌다는 이 책은
이 분야에 조금이라도 관심이 있는 사람이면 꼭 볼만한 귀중한 자료이다.
The Book of Kells, written by Iona Christian Community (this community had its base on the
Iona, the tiny island located in west coast of Scotland, and had great infleuce to evengelize
the Britain) has significant meaning in the history of British Christiandom.

버스를 타고 보는 Dublin시는 매우 친밀하고 경겹게 느껴진다.

16세기 헨리8세의 국교화에 의해 Anglican Church가된 Dublin Christ Church
Language tour bus의 안내인은 이를 설명하느라 너무나 즐겁고 분주해 보인다.
The guider on the bus was amused himself in explain a story of Dublin Christ Church:
this church turned to be one of the Anglican Church when Henry the Eighth declared himself
as the Head of the Anglican Church in the sixteenth century.

그런데 이곳 시의 모습은 영국과 매우 달랐다.
아니 어떤 면에서 한국의 거리 모습과도 비슷하였다
The city has different appearance from that of the U.K.
In some sense, I felt that it looks like the cities in Korea.
왜 그럴까 하고 생각하다가 단순하게 내 나름대로 생각이 떠올랐다
그 사실여부를 떠나서: 먼저 아일랜드에서 미국으로 많은 사람들이
미개척시대부터 이주하였다. 그리고 한국은 미국의 문화적 영향을 매우 강력히
많이 받고 있는 나라이다. 그래서 이곳의 거리 모습과 한국의 그것이 흡사함을
나름대로 생각하게 되었는데 후에 친구들이 그럴듯한 이야기라 한다.
After a few considerations, I made my own assumption on the resemblence of the city of Dublin
and those of Korea: from the early exploration time in America, a lots of Irish went over to America
and made some Irish culture in there. They are present Americans. And the United States has great
influence to Korea in every cutural aspect as well as military power. These factors may worked in
the similarity of the appearance of the cities in Ireland and Korea. Believe or not, one of my
friends agreed with my theory as a plausible one. Anyway it is true that we were suprised at the first
sight of the city which made us to think of the strong resemblence to my home cities.
Chapter V. The Way Back to Home(제5장:벨파스트를 거처 집으로)
다음말 아침 일찍 Belfast로 다시 왔다.
오후에 페리를 타야했기에 좀 서둘러 왔다.
Belfast와 Dublin을 잊는 도로는 비교적 좋은 편이지만
그 중간 지역은 그리 도로 사정이 좋지 못하다.
약 2시간 남짓 걸리는 거리인데 국경의 표시도 없고
신분증을 보자고 하는곳도 없다.
가다가 환전소가 여렷 보이면 그곳이 국경이라 생각하면 된다.
첫날 Belfast에서 받았던 좋지 못한 인상은 Ulster Museum에 잠시 들릴때
좋게 전환 되었다. 그러나 Dublin에 비하여 좀 덜 매력적이라는 개인적 느낌이다.
We left Dublin for Belfast in the next morning because we should catch the afternoon ferry at
Belfast port. We had not so much time in Dublin that we thought we would come back again.
The roads between Dublin and Belfast has mostly good condition except some distance areas from
either of the cities. Approximately it takes two and a half hours by car from Dublin to Belfast.
But there was neither sign nor borderline between R. Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Two parts are open to each other, so nobody wants a VISA or passport to anyone who bypasses.
There were some currency exchange signs near the border.
The first impression on the city of Belfast was not good, and this has a little bit changed to
some good when we visited Ulster Museum in the second visit of the city.
Anyway my personal impression on Belfast is less attractive when compare to Dublin.
Ulster Museum은 Queen’s University 와 같이 있다.
Ulster Museum is located next to Queen’s University.
Ulster Museum은 선사시대의 삶을 잘 표현한 곳으로 매우 유익한 장소이며
주위에 Botanic Garden과 함께 Belfast에서 꼭 가보아야 할 장소중의 하나이다.
물론 입장료도 무료이다.
Ulster Museum has perfect illustrations on the Prehistoric Age, and is really deserve to visit while
you were at Belfast, and is adjacent to Botanic Garden. The entrance fee is free also.

이곳은 주택가의 모습인데 나 에게는 좀 특별한 의미의 장소이다
이곳에서 여행의 일정과 그동안 남편에 대한 분노(?)가 아내로 부터
폭팔한 장소이기 때문이다
누구든 장소에 대한 나름대로의 기억을 가지고 있다
그 장소가 좋건 나쁘건 아름답건 그렇지 못하건 간에
자신의 장소에 대한 인식이 중요하다.
사람은 무었이든 마음먹기 나름이라는데
우리의 생각이 우리의 운명을 바꾸고
삶의 자세를 바꾸어 세상을 바꾸고 만다.
그렇다면 나의 자세는 지금 어디로 가는 걸까?
This picture has some extraordinary meaning for me in addition to its view of normal Belfast residence
area. My beloving wife had expressed her potential angry to me and showed her agony at this scene.
Everyone perceive a place with his or her own idea which attached to the place, which is usually too
subjective. Thus when we speak about a place, we has an idea in our mind which can be associated
with that place, whether the others accept it or not. It is ture that our attitude on our life can change our
real life through inner working of our mental strength. If it is ture, where to I am going now?

부부간의 문제는 언제나 어느한쪽의 잘못이 절대 아닌 쌍방 과실이다.)
A building in Belfast; this picture has taken by my wife when we were heading to Seacat ferry terminal,
and her mind became a little bit peaceful after her explosion to me. For more than fifteen years, I have
not be well at with my wife’s changeable attitude. I presume this is common to every woman. I have a
conviction that every husband and wife’s trouble has its root on both sides, not solely either of them.

Leaving the city of Belfast, the ferry starts her voyage to main land.
인생에 대한 생각을 할거면 여행을 하지 않아도
책상에 앉아서도 할수 있는것이 아닌가?
우린 어디로 와서 왜 다시 이길로 가는지 매우 깊숙히 생각했다
At that time, a serious thought struck my head: ‘we can think about our life even when we are on the
desk without having this troublous voyage’. However, I am on a voyage, then, from where did I come
and to where am I heading for?
짧은 기간이지만 그동안 우리가 만들은 또 다른 인연들은
어떻게 내가 감당할것인지…
과연 나는 그들과의 관계를
현재의 내 주위사람들과의 인연에 비해
어떤 방향으로 끌고 나갈 것인지…
How can I manage to keep contact with new faces with whom I met during this short journey?
However, they can make my life different in any case, hope and I think.
바로 내가 갈곳이 있기에 앞으로 그 목표를 행해
나아가는 것일까?
아니면…
내일은 오늘보다 나으리라는 희망을 가지고 나아가는 것일까?
Now I am going forward to the spot where I have used to be.
Otherwise,
Am I heading for with a little hope that the tomorrow will be better than now?
희망을 향해 우리는 앞으로 나아가는 것이다.
곳 잡힐것 같은 희망이
우리의 마음에 자리 잡고 있는 한 우리는 가야한다.
영원히…
We have our voyage to the Eternal Hope.
We should have it as long as we have at least a tiny Hope in our heart,
until we arrive at the Kingdom of the Father.
Chapter VI. Postscript (제6장: 여행후기)
지난 10월 18일 부터 21일 사이에 한 Ireland여행을 주제로
여행기 올려 보았습니다.
두번째 여행기를 써 보지만
아직 너무 서툴다는 생각뿐입니다.
그래도 제 여행을 진실하게 web상에 옮기려 해 보았습니다.
저는 자주 한국에 가지못하지만
님들을 이곳 카페에서 자주뵈어서 매우
기쁘답니다.
Dear Readers,
Thanks very much for your enormous and kind support on my story on a journey,
which I made during 18-21 October 2004 to the Ireland.
I tried to express my emotional feeling on the journey in addition to its spectacular views, but I feel it’s
not worthy to show it to readers, as it is in every case. The back ground music which I attached in
Part Two is from Chopin Polonaise No.5 in F#, Op.44, which I used to heard in this journey in my
car by audio tape, which makes me to perceive this journey-especially of Dublin- with this
particular fantastic music.
