아일랜드 여행기
Chapter I. Prelude (제1장:여행서곡)
Island와 Ireland는
우리는 발음상 구별하기가 쉽지 않으나 다르다.
Island는 '섬'이라는 뜻의 명사이며
Ireland는 영국제도의 서쪽에 위치한 섬으로
Northern Ireland는 영국 (Great Britain) 에 속해있고
나머지 대부분의 섬은 공화국(Republic of Ireland)이라는 독립국가 이다.
As non-native English speaker, we, Korean, have a difficulty in English, especially when dealing
with the words of similar pronunciation like ‘Island’ and ‘Ireland’.
‘Island’ is a noun with its meaning that the land isolated around the sea, and ‘Ireland’ is the a little bit
small island located in the west side of main land of Britain consists of England, Wales and Scotland.
The Northern Ireland is belonging to the United Kingdom and the rest of ‘Ireland’ is the Republic of
Ireland, surely independent from the U.K. since 1937.
10월의 Holiday를 이용해 잠시 짧은 기간이지만 이곳에 다녀왔다
(참고로 Scotland은 holiday가 자주 그리고 조금씩 있다; 이번 10월 holiday는
원래 감자를 수확하는 계절에 일손을 돕기 위해 생긴 휴일이라하는데 2주간 쉰다)
여행은 보통 일주일이상의 기간을 가지고 하는것이 좋으나
큰아이의 피아노 contest가 곧 있어 4일간만 다녀오기로 하였다.
어느 도시에 내려 사진만 몇장 찍고는 그 나라를 다녀왔다고 하는
한국형 발도장 찍기식 여행이 정말 싫으나
이번 여행은 한가한 여유속에서 많이 보기보단
느끼기를 중요하게 생각하는 여행이길 바랬다.
특히 Dublin에 대한 사전 여행정보가 전무한 상태이기에
나 자신도 어떻게 여행이 전개될지 스스로 궁금해 했다.
My family have been to Ireland during last October Holiday.
Scotland has many short holidays.
The October Holiday is originated from traditional potato harvest break and it lasted two weeks.
A trip usually needs more than a week; however, we had only four days break because of not enough
time since my son, Seunghyun, will go to Elgin piano competition in the middle of coming November.
I hate a ‘crazy tour’ that leaves footsteps in a city and take a photo and say ‘we have been that country.’
I hoped this trip would be the one for feeling the landscape rather than taking many sight views.
Furthermore, no information on the city of Dublin makes me to expect what kind of travel I could have.
Chapter II. Arriving at the City of Belfast(제2장:낯선도시에서의 방황)
우리는 자주 스스로에 대한 질문을 하며 살아간다
‘지금 내가 선 이곳이 나에게 적절한 장소인가?’
우리는 머무를 때보다는 떠날때가 더 중요하다.
떠아야 할 때를 알고 행동에 옮기는 것이 삶을 지혜롭게 사는 방법중의 하나이다.
가장 좋다고 느낄때 떠나라는 말이 있다.
지금까지 나는 가장 좋다고 생각될때 그 자리를 여러번 떠난적이 있다.
We used to have questions about ourselves:
‘is this the proper place which I should and can belong to be?’
‘When should we leave?’ seems to be more crucial question than of ‘should I be here?’
This is the question in our life.
There is a Korean proverb that ‘leave your place when it is best condition’.
I have been leaved the places when I think they were the extremely good.
아쉬움이 남지만 그 미련을 버리고 나아가는 자가
더 좋은 것을 얻기 마련이다.
그러나, 항상 그럴까?
The one who leave his or her place though with their reluctance can get something valuable.
Do you agree on this even in every case?
배는 풍량에 흔들리지 않고 우리를 Belfast로 내려 주었다.
At last we arrived at the city of Belfast by Seacat ferry smoothly though there were some waves.

신교도와 카톨릭교도간의 끊임 없는 전쟁
그리고 연영방 분리주의자의 끊임없는 분쟁의 도시
서로간의 반목이 너무나 심하여 도로에 표시까지 있을 정도이다.
There have been endless conflicts between Catholics and Protestants alongside with independent
movement from the United Kingdom in this city. Two opponents’ conflicts were so serious that
they do not have a common community and divided themselves with the wall and colours of
roadside lines as well.

벽화는 신.구교도간의 종교와 국가독립전쟁의 심각함을 보여준다.
그보다 관광객들에겐 Titanic의 도시로 인정되고 있다.
Made in Belfast, Titanic은 이곳에서 1911년 만들어져
그 불행한 첫 항로에 오르게 된다.
This mural picture tells the reality of the conflict.
However, for the traveller, this city has been recognized with its famous Titanic.
This giant ship was built in Belfast in 1911 and launched her sorrowful virgin and the last voyage.
그 도시에서 도착하자마자 길을 읽고 말았다.
같은 영국이니 괜ㅎ찮겠지 하는 안일한 생각이
낯선 도시에서 한밤에30여분이나 헤메게 되였다.
Irish는 너무나 친절하다는데 하는 희망을 안고
나는 도움을 청할수 밖에 없었다.
한밤에 길을 읽고 헤메는 나는 옆차의 아가씨들이 탄 차로가 길을 물자
그들는 자신도 알지 못하는 숙소를 물어물어 안내 해주었다.
큰애는 Irish아가씨들이 길을 찾아 다니고 나는 그뒤를 열심히 따라 가는 10여분동안
우리나라 사람들도 저렇게 친절 하냐고 묻는다…
친절함이 너무나 고마워 고맙다는 말을 제대로 하기도 전에
여행을 잘하라는 한마디 남긴체 갈길을 간다.
첫날밤의 호스텔은 정말로 최악이였다.
다시는 그곳에 가고 싶지 않을 정도이다.
My first experience in the city was lost the way at midnight.
I had not concerned of the city road for this was in the U.K, which made me absolutely out of way
more than a half hour. I had no other choice except to inquire the direction on the road with the hope
that Irish are kind. As soon as I asked the direction, two Irish ladies in the next car showed me the way
with their kindness and struggle to reach the Hostel while questioning themselves.
While we were chasing the Irish ladies’ car, my son asked me this could be the same situation in Korea
in the aspect of kindness.
At last we arrived at the Hostel and the ladies had gone with their saying ‘Have a nice trip’.
The Linden Hostel in Belfast was the worst one which we ever experienced.
Chapter III. Northern Ireland(제3장:아름다운 노던 아일랜드)
시내 구경은 돌아오는 길에 하기로 하고
아침 일찍 북쪽 해안으로 향하였다.
Next day at morning we departed for north coast leaving the city behind.
영국에서 아일랜드가 어떠냐고 물으면 ‘more green’이라 답한다.
내가 살고 있는 Scotland도 푸르지만 Ireland는 더욱 푸르다는 뜻이다.
When we asked about Ireland, they used to say it’s ‘more green’.
They, most UK citizens, think Ireland has most green nature in the U.K.
먼저 북쪽 해안가의 Ballycastle에 도착하였다
아른다운 절경…
Firstly we arrived at Ballycastle, the small village located in northern coast.
It was beautiful!
파란 바다 물결이 너무나 아름답고 진하여
가슴속에 바다가 들어온다.
The emerald blue colour of the sea was gorgeous. And I became a part of it.
지금은 시즌이 조금 지나서인지
구름다리가 철수하고 보이지 않는다.
같은 관광객이지만 영국인으로 보이는 일행이
피부색갈이 다른 우리를 보자 여름철엔 다시다리가 놓여질거라며
우리를 이곳이 좋은곳이라는 곳이라는 사실을
인식시키고는 친절히 가족사진까지 찍어준다.
The rope bridge, which used to be here, has gone away because the time was out of season.
The other visitors in this sight assured us that the rope bridge would be laid again in the
next season. Also he showed a favour to take a family photo with his consideration for a family
of a different ethnic background.

National Trust 인 Giant Causeway는 정말로 장관이다.
화산분출에 의하여 만들어진 곳으로 6각형 원주의 암반이 해안을
뒤덥고 있다.
The Giant’s Causeway, one of the National Trust in Ireland, has spectacular views.
There are continous hexagonal pillars made by volcanic eruption around the coastline.
얼마전 BBC에서 영국의 지형에 관한 프로그램이 방영된적이 있는데
영국의 아름다운 지형은 빙하기에서 얼음이 녹고 일부 화산분출로 인하여
형성되었다 한다.
Recently BBC broadcasted the Natural Science, in which says that the present UK landscape had been
formed by the emergence out of the Glacial Age and with some volcanic activity through the land.
하지만 이곳은 나름대로의 전설도 빠지지 않고 가지고 있다.
두 거대한 거인이 싸우며 바위를 던저 현재의 모습이 되었다고
안내 하는 Bus driver는 이야기 한다.
Interestingly this place also has a tale of mythological giants, who throw a land to the sea of the
Scotland. And this made this scene of Giant’s Causeway.

오늘 길에 들리게 되는 White Park Bay
눈앞에 펼처진 바다가의 모습에 우린 그저 처다만 보았다.
This is the scene of the White Park Bay viewed from the Road A2.
What a word can describe this fantastic view!
어릴적 아름다운 바닷가의 모습을 꿈꾸던 그런 모습이라고
아내는 경치에 푹빠져있다.
Soonkee said this was what exactly she had dreamed of a beautiful and fantastic oceanic scene
in her childhood.
바다와 주위의 풍경은 그림이였다.
중학교시절 미술시간에 그림물감을 물과 석을때
물을 적당량보다 조금넣어 너무 진한 칼라가 나와
그린 진한색의 한폭의 수채화이다.
It has a feeling of a picture of watercolours.
The colours of the scene was somewhat strong likewise when in the secondary school class
water was less in a balance while we made a mixture of water and watercolours.

우리는 늦지 않게 Dublin에 도착하려 차려 몰았다
I drove car to the road because I didn’t want to find a way at a dark street in a strange city, Dublin.
그러나 밤 늦게서야 도착하였다.
Undesirably I arrived at late night.
