프렌더개스트는 미국의 뛰어난 수채화가이며 미국에서 처음으로 독특한 후기 인상주의의 폭넓은 색채를 사용한 화가이다. 1880년대에 2년 동안 파리에서 미술을 공부했으며 그곳에서 프랑스 인상주의 미술가들과 제임스 맥닐 휘슬러의 영향을 받았다.

The Phillips Collection, Washington     그가 2번째로 유럽을 여행한 기간에 그린 〈빗속의 우산들 Umbrellas in the Rain〉(1899, 보스턴 미술관)과 같은 그림은 후기 인상주의의 경향, 특히 에두아르 뷔야르와 폴 세잔의 그림들 및 점묘주의의 원리에 새롭게 관심을 가지게 되었음을 보여주고 있다.             Central Park, 1901

Whitney Museum of American Art, New York       후기의 그림들은 부유하는 기하학적 색면으로 모자·우산·나무·풍선·마차바퀴 등을 묘사하고 있다. 1904년 이전의 작품은 거의 수채화였지만 이때 이후로는 점점 수채화 스케치를 기초로 해서 유화를 많이 그렸다.           Central Park, 1901
