John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) 존 싱거 서전트 (1856-1925)는 당대에 미국이나 유럽에서 사회적으로 신분이 있거나 이름이 난 저명인사들의 매혹적인 자태를 그리는 초상화가였다. 그는 1856년 이태리 플로랜스에서 태어났으며 부모들은 미국인으로 아버지는 외과 의사였고, 어머니의 부계는 필라델피아의 상인이였다. 그의 양친은 19세기말에 외국으로 이주한 부유한 가족중의 하나로 가족전체가 영국과 유럽대륙을 끊임없이 여행하게 된다. 이는 그로 하여금 사회적이나 문화적으로 여러가지 생활과 사고를 여유롭게 하는 계기가 되었다. 그는 이러한 가정환경 덕택에 어릴 때부터 이태리, 프랑스 및 독일 등의 여러 곳에서 널리 공부하게 되었으며 여러 나라의 언어에도 능통한 사람이 된다. 그의 1878년 작품인 [캔 케일의 조개잡이 (Oyster Gatherers of Cancale)]는 파리 미술전에서 찬사를 얻어 호평을 받기 시작하였다. 1880년대에 그는 외국으로 그림여행을 하면서 1882년까지 이태리 베니스에서 그림작업을 하게 되며 그곳에서 빛과 그림자로 어우러진 거리풍경과 유명한 민속놀이 광경을 그려 나갔다. 그는 또한 초상화가로서 1882년 작품인 [보이트 딸(The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit)] 이라는 초상화는 상당히 많은 돈을 받았다.
