Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer(1836-1910)    미국 보스턴 출생으로 독학으로 그림을 배운 윈슬로 호머는  잡지의 일러스트레이터로 출발해서 불란서에서 본격적으로 인상파들이 빛을 표현하는 방법에 깊은 영향을 받아 작가로서 성숙하게 되지만 결코 유럽인상파와는 다른 미국적이며 자연주의화가라는  명망과 함께 말년에 까지 활발히 작품활동을 했다. 특히 후반기에 수채화를 시작한 그는 유화와 병행하면서 기념비적인 많은 작품들을 남겼다. 일생의 대부분을 보낸 매사츄세스의 바다풍경 그리고 말년에 많은 시간을 보내게 되는 플로리다 바하마 캐러비안의 풍경과 아울러 우아하고 따뜻하지만  귀족풍이라기 보다는 서민여성의 아름다움을 흠모했던 듯한 그는 그 당시 미국의 자연주의 화가중 보기 드믈게 많은 여성을 모델로한 작품을 남겼다. 그의 여성들은 특히 그믈을 맨다던가 바느질을 하고 또 수유를 하는등 일하는 모습을 많이 담고 있다. 석판화를 배운 뒤 잡지 《하퍼스 위클리》의 삽화가가 되어 남북전쟁의 종군기록화로 명성을 얻었다. 그러나 나중에는 야간 미술학교에서 수채화를 익히고 평생 동안  동부 ·남부 각지의 풍경화와 풍속화만을 계속 그렸다. 그는 옥외에서의 사생을 중시하고 밝은 색채와 광선을 존중하는 한편,  삽화의 경험을 살려 대상의 명확한 묘사로 독특한 화풍(畵風)을 수립하였다.  그는 또 통속적인 주제에 서정성을 곁들여 표현, 유럽풍(風) 위주의 미국화단에 새로운 바람을 불러일으켜 대중의 지지를 받았다.  대표작에 《멕시코 만류》《전선에서 온 포로들》《산들바람》《구명밧줄》 등이 있다.   -The Blackboard -Fisher Girls on Shore A Voice from Cliffs -Mending the Nets -The Gale -Fisherman's Family -Fisher Girls on the shore  -Where are  the boats? -The Nooning -The Bridle Path -The Croquet Game -On The Hill -Peach Blossoms -Sunlight and Shadow -Fresh air -The New Novel -A Summer Night Winslow Homer(1836-1910) England     An October Day, 1889, watercolor,   Home, Sweet Home, 1863, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
