세련되지 못한 투박한 관능. 고갱을 바라보는 내 시선이다. 아니 고갱을 바라보는 내 머리라고 해야 적합할 것이다. 머리로 바라보는 그림이니 ‘세련’이니 ‘투박’이니 하는 가치편향적인 언어가 쓰이게 된다. 그림을 볼 줄 모르는 머리로는 그림을 평가할 수밖에 없다. 사유가 생략된 지점에서 행해지는 평가는 정당하지 못하다. 그러기에 고갱에 대한 나의 평가는 부당하다. 세련되지 못한 투박한 관능이라는 평가는 부당한 것이다.

고갱이 화폭에 담아내고자 했던 것은 무엇인가? 방랑 기질을 타고난 고갱의 모험은 무엇을 위한 것이었던가? 색을 찾아 떠난 그가 발견한 빛은 무엇인가? 온갖 질문들이 머리를 맴돌고 있지만 질문에 대한 답을 찾기보다는 그가 남긴 그림을 보는 것이 더욱 현명한 처사일 것이다. 그가 발견한 것들은 그의 그림 속에 고스란히 남아있기 때문이다. 그러니 그저 그의 작품을 감상하면 된다. 평가는 내가 행할 몫이 아니다. 다만 색을 찾아 떠난 고갱의 시선을 쫓아 그가 발견하는 빛에 황홀한 시선을 던지면 그만이다. 그러나 나에게는 던질 만한 시선조차 있지 못하다.

Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow       세련되지 못한 투박한 관능. 고갱을 바라보는 내 시선이다. 아니 고갱을 바라보는 내 머리라고 해야 적합할 것이다. 서두에 끄집어낸 말들은 결국 내게로 돌아온다. 고갱을 바라보는 내 머리, 그리고 내 시선은 세련되지 못한 투박함일 뿐이다. 미술을 바라보는, 미술을 이해하는, 미술을 감상하는, 미술을 향유하는, 나의 세련되지 못한 투박한 시선이 문제이다. 고갱이 뿜어내는 색체가 세련되지 못하여 투박한 것이 아니라, 고갱을 바라보는 내 시선이 세련되지 못하여 투박하다. 제 눈의 안경이라는 말은 괜히 있는 것이 아닌가 보다. 역시 색안경을 끼고 보면 세상은 너무나 단조롭다  - 프랑소아즈 카생 "고갱" 에서..         Matamoe
