"마네 Edouard Manet(1832-1883)"의 작품세계

"마네 Edouard Manet(1832-1883)" 파리 출생. 인상주의의 아버지로 불린다. 법관의 아들로 유복한 가정에서 태어났다. 처음에는 아버지가 화가 지망을 허락하지 않아서 17세 때 남아메리카 항로의 선원 견습생이 되었다. 남아메리카를 항해한 1850년 겨우 쿠튀르의 아틀리에에 들어갈 수 있었다. 그러나 아카데믹한 역사화가인 스승에게 반발하여 자유연구로 나아가 루브르미술관 등에서 고전회화 를 모사, F.할스나 벨라스케스 등 네덜란드나 에스파냐화파의 영향을 받았다. 살롱에는 1861년 겨우 입선하여 수상한 바 있으나, 처음부터 이색적인 작품은 그 후에도 여러 차례에 걸쳐 낙선을 거듭하였다. 혁신적인 작품은 1863년 낙선전(落選展)에 전시된 《풀밭 위의 점심 Le Djeuner sur lherbe》, 1865년의 살롱 입선작《올랭피아 Olympia》로 일약 세상의 주목을 끌었다. 이 두 작품에 대한 비난은 지나쳤으나 도리어 그의 표현기법의 참신성과 밝음을 결정적으로 인상지어준 결과가 되었다. 이 사건 이래 화단과 문단 일부에서 열렬한 지지자를 얻었고, 자신을 경모(敬慕)하는 C.피사로, C.모네, A.시슬레 등 청년화가들 사이에서 그 후에 대두될 인상주의에의 길을 여는 기연(機緣)을 이루었다. 그러나 마네 자신은 아카데미즘의 공인을 기다려, 인상파그룹의 전람회에 참가하기를 거부하고, 그들과 동일시되는 것을 대단히 꺼렸으나 한때는 인상파기법을 채용하여 제작한 적도 있다. 만년에는 레지옹 도뇌르훈장을 받았으나, 류머티즘으로 고생하여 육체적 피로도가 비교적 적은 파스텔화(畵)를 그렸다. 그래도 《막시밀리안의 처형 L’Excution de Maximilien》(1867), 《폴리 베르제르의 술집 Le Bar Folies-Bergre》(1882) 등 유화의 걸작을 남기고 51세의 생애를 파리에서 마쳤다. 세련된 도시적 감각의 소유자로 주위의 활기 있는 현실을 예민하게 포착하는 필력에서는 유례없는 화가였다. 종래의 어두운 화면에 밝음을 도입하는 등 전통과 혁신을 연결하는 중개역을 수행한 점에서 공적이 크다.
